My Journey and Tips on Language Learning

My name is Ioanna and I am multilingual. Or at least, I strive to be. I am from Greece and my native language is Greek. Of course, just like a lot of children in European countries, I started learning English when I was 6 years old. In addition, I have studied Russian Philology and Slavic Languages, so I have gained a commendable proficiency in Russian. Presently, I work as a Russian Tutor, teaching the Russian language to kids and adults, and I also translate into Russian and English.

During my academic journey, I started learning the Polish language because I would need it for my Erasmus semester at the University of Warsaw. Last year, I started learning the Spanish language, and now I am doing my internship in Barcelona. As my studies are related to Slavic languages, I also had some short courses in the Ukrainian, Bulgarian, and Serbian languages. This allows me to have a basic understanding of them.

From the time you start to learn a second or a third language, learning new foreign languages becomes an addiction. My future aspirations include delving into Arabic and potentially an Asian language, such as Japanese. What always excited me was how many new things I learned about a country's culture that was connected to the language. For instance, while I was practicing Polish, I discovered the remarkable writer, Olga Tokarczuk. Afterward, I came across the films of Kieślowski, and the music of Sanah, Dawid Podsiadło, and Kwiat Jabłoni.

Throughout this learning journey, I followed several practices that helped me to retain vocabulary and increase fluency. Firstly, I started using flashcards and doing lots of grammar and vocabulary review exercises on the weekends. I also started watching movies, TV series, and reality shows on Netflix with subtitles in the language I was learning. Along with this, I looked up foreign YouTubers and influencers on social media to learn more practical phrases used daily by young people, and slang. It helped me also a lot to read news online to expand my vocabulary on topics such as politics, environment, economy, business, etc.

And no. By no means am I one of those child prodigies who speak an astonishing ten foreign languages since adolescence. I’m also not the kind of person who learns a foreign language very quickly. At times, I forget easily, and I need to see a word several times to memorize it. Sometimes with so many languages in my head, I may have difficulty thinking of a more complex sentence even in my native language. But what I have noticed that gets results and helps me the most is to practice each language every day, even for 10-15 minutes. So, this is where mobile language learning apps have played an important role in my daily life.
