Residing in Spain

There are new considerations that need to be made when it comes to moving to a new location. Some of these things include documents necessary for the temporary to long-term stay in that particular place. In Spain, specifically, people that are not part of the Non-European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland are required to obtain student residence permit and entrepreneur residence permit issued by the authority. Students for example, are entitled to this document with which they are allowed to renew until the finish of their studies. This article will be focusing on some of the details required so as to obtain the necessary the two specific documents.



Student resident permit


As a student looking to obtain their further education in Spain, it is necessary to obtain a student residence permit, it should be noted the country corresponding the individual’s nationality must be accepted for travel to Spain. First and foremost, there should be evidence of admission into a Spanish education centre with which the student will continue their studies. The individual must show the capability of financial means to stay and eventually return to their country. In addition, there must be enrolment into private or public health insurance that the individual is going to be ensured in case of any check-ups or health emergence needed. The following are the more specific documents according to the Ministry of inclusion, social security and migration;

  • National visa application form, in an official model, in duplicate, duly completed and signed by the foreigner or his legal representative in case of being a minor. This form can be obtained at www.maec.es

  • Complete and valid passport or travel title, recognized as valid in Spain, with a minimum validity of the period for which the stay is requested.

  • Documentation proving that you have the necessary financial means for the period requested and for the return to the country of origin.

  • In the case of underage students, authorization from parents or guardians stating the centre, organization, entity and body responsible for the activity and the planned period of stay.

  • Documentation proving that you have health insurance.

  • Documentation accrediting being admitted to a teaching centre, this could be an admission letter.

  • If the duration of the stay exceeds six months: Medical certificate.





Entrepreneur residence permit


On the more business-related arena, individuals working in the business sector, or entrepreneurship are required to also required to have a sort of permit: the entrepreneur residence permit. The requirements and procedure are similar to the one mentioned above. The entrepreneur residence permit is acquired when the particular individual wants to extend their stay in Spain, i.e., beyond 90 days in which they can work or even begin a business project. The following are the necessary documents according to the Ministry of inclusion, social security and inclusion;

  • Responsible declaration detailing the means with which it accredits the sufficiency of economic resources.

  • Documentation accrediting having passed the tests and having obtained at least the university degree title

  • Copy of valid passport or travel document, recognized as valid in Spain, with a minimum validity of 12 months. The original document will be displayed at the time of submitting the application.

  • Documentation proving that you have health insurance.


Both permits give the opportunity to travel in the Schengen area in Europe. It must be noted that all foreign documents must be translated to the Spanish language and as well legalised by the consular office in Spain.
