Author:  Magdalena Simova

Did you know that over 80% of jobs are filled through networking—not online applications? Do you have a LinkedIn profile but rarely get interview calls? The problem might be your LinkedIn profile. Let’s take a look at what you can change to start seeing better results and increase your chances of success.

Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Recruiters

How can you sell on LinkedIn in one sentence?

  • Headline & Summary: Your LinkedIn headline is the gateway to your profile. It determines whether someone clicks on your profile. That´s why it´s extremely important to make it attractive. You should answer the following questions: What are you doing? How and for whom are you doing it? And why are you doing it?

  • Experience & Achievements: Post only relevant experience that helps you stand out. For example, if you´re working in marketing analytics, don´t include unrelated experience like PCP, Figma, SEO tools and etc.

  • Skills & Endorsements: Did you know that recruiters use keywords to find the ideal candidate? That´s why it´s important to include specific keywords in your position. Using relevant keywords, for example, if you are searching for a data analytics position, your keywords should include SQL, Python, and PowerBi.

  • Profile Photo & Banner: Your profile photo should be professional. The banner is the first thing people see. It should be attractive and stand out from other LinkedIn profiles. For example, you can highlight the companies you´ve collaborated with or your experiences in a field.

Tailor Applications & Network Effectively

Networking is important when building new contacts on LinkedIn. You can use custom cover messages. It´s about short messages that you can add to your connection request.

Be active. Join discussions, comment on posts, and send thoughtful connection requests. Follow what interests you. Keep an open mind and share your skills and opinions. Try to help others whenever you can. Build your visibility by joining relevant LinkedIn groups.

Leverage LinkedIn Features

If you want to impress recruiters, use LinkedIn features such as Open to Work, Job Alerts, or consider paying for LinkedIn Premium benefits.

  • Open to Work – It´s a function that shows recruiters you are open to new job opportunities. Try to specify the exact positions you are interested in, choose preferred locations, and set whether this information is visible to recruiters.

  • Job Alerts & Saved Searches – On LinkedIn, you can create job alerts, which are notifications that inform you about new job offers, allowing you to respond quickly.

  • LinkedIn Premium Benefits: - offers benefits such as InMail, LinkedIn Learning, and Insights. Thanks to InMail, you are allowed to send messages to people outside your circle of contacts. You can build new business contacts. LinkedIn Learning is a platform with online courses, where you can choose courses in different areas (business, marketing, or creative). Insights provide detailed information about market trends, firms, and other candidates.

Showcase Your Expertise

Focus on content creation, but don´t forget the algorithm. When posting on LinkedIn, don´t forget about the algorithm. It helps your posts reach more users. Also, remember to use hashtags, 3 relevant hashtags that the algorithm can understand. And don´t forget to add all text to your images. Maintain connections with industry leaders. By staying visible and active, you increase your attractiveness to future employers. Regular engagement with leaders in your field keeps you on their radar and opens up new opportunities. If you want to boost your credibility on LinkedIn, you can ask for recommendations. Don´t be shy. It´s about your career. Endorsements are like social proof that helps build trust with employers and clients.

Follow Up Like a Pro

Be professional. For example, if you are at a marketing conference and you meet a professional in your field, and you have a LinkedIn profile, you can send them a message. You should take advantage of the opportunity. Find these people on LinkedIn and reach out to them. Ideally, send a follow–up within 1–

3 days. Show your interest and professionalism. If you don´t want to miss opportunities, use a tracking system where you write down the people.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

If you want to be successful on this social platform, avoid making common mistakes. Your profile is the first thing recruiters see, so take good care of it. Include everything from your experience that is relevant to your future job. Don´t send the same application everywhere. Be active. Post your own content or share other people´s content with your comments. Engage in discussions with others. Consistency is key. One activity per month is not enough. Learn how the LinkedIn algorithm works and use it (keywords in your profile and posts, engaging in comment discussions).

Conclusion

So, if you don´t have a LinkedIn profile yet, create one immediately. Fill out your profile with relevant information and start posting your own content. There might be recruiters waiting for someone just like you on the platform.
