Italian Cities

In 2025, living in an Italian city means much more than choosing a beautiful landscape to admire: it is instead about choosing places that can offer high quality of life, efficiency in services, cultural and entertainment activities, safety, innovation and job opportunities. National rankings confirm the excellence of some areas, located in northern Italy, that stand out for their balance of life.

Below are the five cities that are really worthwhile today.

1.Bergamo

The Miracle of Growth

Referring to the 2024 edition of the annual ranking of the famous Italian newspaper Sole 24 Ore, Bergamo took the top spot in the quality of life ranking, surpassing even historical names such as Trento and Bolzano. This great step forward, starting from a #52 position in 2020, shows and enhances investments regarding sustainability, social services, culture and safety. In addition, Bergamo is now considered a balanced city: accessible to all, well connected and rich in cultural offerings: museums, event spaces and festivals, ideal for those seeking a mix of territorial success and quality of life.

2.Trento

The Efficient Heart of the Alps

Always on the national podium, Trento offers excellent public services, safety and a special closeness to nature. Trento, according to Sole 24 Ore, ranks among the top three Italian provinces, confirming its solidity. Overlooking the Dolomites, it represents an optimal environment for families and professionals who want a modern, up-to-date setting where cultural events (film, science, mountain culture) relate to the local community in an innovative and authentic way.

3.Bolzano

Excellence for Seniors and Nature

Bolzano leads the rankings for quality of life for the population over 65 . The city offers efficient health services and a territorial welfare considered one of the best in Italy, with several libraries and advanced social policies. Nestled among beautiful alpine landscapes and a vast cultural heritage, Bolzano is perfect for those who want a quiet but high-quality life, with numerous local events, food and wine festivals, and sustainable cultural initiatives.

In addition, Bolzano is a unique city in its ability to combine well-being and dignity in old age with a remarkable sense of community, allowing seniors to be able to take advantage of services, but most importantly to be able to do various activities to stay active and culturally engaged.

4.Gorizia

Opportunities for Young People

For the second consecutive year, Gorizia was named the best city for quality of life for the 18-35 age group. Thanks to a strong regional system that fosters youth employment, services tailored to those under 35, and cross-border cultural dynamics, Gorizia represents a concrete opportunity for those wishing to grow in cultured, stimulating, and accessible environments, plenty of events, associations, and participatory networks.

Moreover, its proximity to Slovenia and its role as European Capital of Culture 2025 (together with Nova Gorica) make Gorica a true cultural and creative hub. Young people can participate in international projects, artistic residencies and cross-cultural collaborations. From music to visual arts, from digital innovation to sustainable entrepreneurship, Gorizia is fast becoming a springboard for the future generation of Italian and European innovators

5.Lecco

A Family-Friendly City

Lecco tops the Sole24Ore rankings for quality of life for children (0–14 years). Its excellent academic performance, dedicated sports areas, safety, and family-friendly services make it the undisputed queen of family-friendly cities. Located on Lake Como and surrounded by mountains, it enjoys the perfect setting for those who want to raise their children amidst nature and culture, with literary festivals, scenic walks, and educational workshops for the little ones.

Moreover, beyond its immense beauty, what makes the city of Lecco truly special is its ability to offer families balance and a sense of belonging, a place where childhood can be experienced in safety and tranquility.
