Career Options after Masters in Political Science


Political Science is an interesting field to study, as it covers a lot of topics and offers a broad variety of job opportunities. The classic career path is going into politics (local or national government). However, not everyone is interested or has the skills necessary for this job. For those of you, who are indecisive about which way to go after your master in political science, here are some interesting alternatives. Of course, they depend on  your interests, skills and experiences.

1. Community Organiser

A community organiser unites all kinds of people of a community or neighbourhood. One main task is to motivate people to work together on projects and try to solve social issues. Workplaces are, for instance, community centres, schools or non-profit organisations. Furthermore, as community organiser, you implement projects around public housing, community development, social work or areas related to those. For example, you could host a fundraising event to generate money to help modernise a nursery school.


2. Campaign Manager

A campaign manager organises and oversees the campaign for a political candidate. The candidate may be running for president, chairperson or governor. In the position of a campaign manager you have to create content that outlines the benefits of your political candidate. What’s more, you have to outline the views on various political issues and plans for changes in policy, if they win the election. Besides that, they manage fundraising, marketing, polling, preparing press releases and they even draft speeches for their clients.


3. Economist

An economist is responsible for conducting research. They are a specialist for economic issues, such as current employment rates, labour activities and new governmental policies. In addition, they have a lot of knowledge about globalisation. It is essential to have an extensive background in statistical modelling, science and mathematics. To collect data, analyse trends and data are only a few of their tasks. Additionally, they write reports and work as consultants for government agencies and other organisations.


4. Lobbyist

A lobbyist´s main task is to influence political decisions on behalf of specific organisations and people. Their actions typically lead to proposals of new legislations or amendments of laws and regulations that already exist. However, lobbyists are not allowed to influence politicians by means of gifts or money, this is ensured by law. Additionally, all lobbyists have to register with their state. In that way they show that they are acting on behalf of a company or an interest group and increase transparency.


5. Political Journalist

As a political journalist, profound expertise in politics and a thorough understanding of the political system and its environment is crucial. They publish articles, which increase the public awareness for politics and political issues. However, it is very important to keep those articles in simple language, so that everyone can understand them. Otherwise, they don’t fulfil their goal. Therefore, the articles are a way of educating the public and help them make informed decisions (e.g. in elections).

Are there various Career Options after a Master’s in Political Science?

As you can see, there are more career options to political sciences than you might have expected at the beginning. All of these jobs offer interesting and brilliant opportunities for all kinds of personalities and interests. Obviously, I only mentioned some, there are a lot more jobs to explore. Depending on where your interests lie and what you want to focus on, you can choose different paths.
