The Future of Electric Vehicles: What Will Shape the EV Market in the Next Decade?

The next phase will be decided less by record-breaking range and more by affordability, charging and industrial execution
The EV Market Is Growing Up
Electric vehicles have moved beyond the experimental stage. More than 20 million electric cars were sold worldwide in 2025, equal to one quarter of all new-car sales. The International Energy Agency expects that figure to reach about 23 million in 2026. The direction is clear, but the next stage of growth will be more demanding than the first.
Early adopters were often willing to pay more, plan charging carefully and accept a limited choice of models. Mass-market buyers are less forgiving. They expect an electric car to be affordable, easy to charge, dependable in winter and straightforward to repair. They also care about insurance, resale value and the condition of a used battery. The winning EV will not simply be the one with the longest range. It will be the one that fits ordinary life with the least friction.

Affordability Will Matter More Than Maximum Range
Price remains the most immediate barrier. Competition and lower battery costs are already changing the picture: the IEA reports that 70% of battery-electric cars sold in China in 2025 were cheaper than the average conventional car. Germany also saw the average price of a battery-electric vehicle fall by about 6% as more affordable models reached the market. Yet low-cost options remain limited in parts of Europe and North America.
For years, manufacturers competed through larger batteries, more power and longer advertised range. Those features made electric cars desirable, but they also made many of them heavy and expensive. The larger opportunity may now be less glamorous: compact vehicles with enough range for daily use, predictable battery health and monthly payments close to those of a comparable petrol or hybrid car. A practical car at the right price can expand the market more effectively than another premium model built around a headline number.
Charging Has to Become Boring and Reliable
Home charging is one of the strongest advantages of an EV, but it is not available to everyone. Apartment residents, renters and drivers who park on the street need dependable alternatives. Under current policies, the IEA expects more than 350 million charging points to be added worldwide between 2026 and 2035. Most will be at homes or workplaces, while public chargers will represent only a small share of the total network.
The experience matters as much as the number of plugs. Drivers remember broken units, blocked spaces, confusing apps and prices that change between operators. Clear payment, accurate availability information and safe, well-maintained locations may build more confidence than another small increase in maximum charging speed. The best charging network will be the one people stop having to think about.
Battery Progress Is Becoming an Industrial Story
Battery technology will continue to improve, but there may not be one chemistry for every vehicle. Lithium iron phosphate batteries have helped reduce costs and reliance on nickel and cobalt. Sodium-ion technology may suit smaller cars and urban fleets, while solid-state designs still need to prove that they can be manufactured reliably at scale. A city car, a family SUV and a long-distance truck do not require the same balance of price, weight and range.
Scale is now as important as laboratory performance. Global EV battery deployment reached 1.2 terawatt-hours in 2025, almost 30% more than in 2024. Producing far more batteries will require efficient factories, skilled suppliers, traceable materials and systems for repair and recycling. China currently has a major advantage: it produced nearly three quarters of the world's electric cars in 2025 and exported more than 2.5 million. Competitors will need to improve manufacturing speed and cost control, not only design better vehicles.
Policy Will Keep the Transition Uneven
EV demand still responds quickly to subsidies, tax rules and emissions standards. Europe returned to stronger growth in 2025, while the end of incentives contributed to a sharp slowdown in Canada. Emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Latin America expanded quickly as more affordable vehicles became available. There will not be one global timetable.
The policy picture can change while carmakers plan products and factories years in advance. The European Commission's current proposal would add flexibility to the bloc's 2035 rules while retaining a strong signal toward electrification. Manufacturers will therefore need regional strategies and flexible platforms instead of assuming that one plan will work everywhere.

Ownership Trust and Sustainability Will Shape Demand
As the first large generation of EVs enters the used-car market, buyers will ask practical questions. How much capacity remains in the battery? What does the warranty cover? Can an independent repairer diagnose the vehicle? How long will its software be supported? Clear battery-health certificates and transparent repair information could become as important as mileage and service history.
Environmental claims will also face closer examination. Electric cars have no tailpipe emissions, but their full impact depends on vehicle size, electricity generation, battery manufacturing and end-of-life treatment. A 2025 ICCT analysis estimated that battery-electric cars sold in the European Union produce substantially lower life-cycle greenhouse-gas emissions than comparable petrol cars. That advantage should grow as electricity becomes cleaner, but it does not remove the need for responsible sourcing and effective recycling.
What Will Shape the EV Market by 2035?
The IEA projects that electric vehicles could account for around half of global car sales by 2035 even without new policy announcements. Growth will still look different across regions: some buyers will choose battery-electric cars, others hybrids, while commercial fleets may move faster where operating savings are clear.
The strongest companies will treat the car as one part of a wider system. They will combine an affordable vehicle with dependable charging, durable software, understandable battery information and a supply chain that can adapt to political change. The next decade will not be won by making electric cars feel more futuristic. It will be won by making electric driving feel normal.
