Internships are a fantastic opportunity for getting noticed. Here are some unique ways to make the most out of your internship.
Find what roles there are in your area of work and understand their purpose.
We grow up knowing only a handful of professions. Oftentimes in our youth, we are familiar with doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. However, later we learn that there are many diverse careers. Imagine an office, almost every person there is hired with a different purpose. An internship will put you in that office allowing you to explore roles with which you were completely unfamiliar.
Use this time to develop your communication skills.
Without a doubt, interpersonal skills are crucial for effective communication and collaboration. These skills allow you to connect with individuals and organizations in both your personal and professional life. A great way to start is with small talk. Start communicating with colleagues and see if they are open to a conversation. If yes, proceed to ask them about their role and if they mind showing you what their work consists of . This works great for icebreaking. If the person is not up for a chat, find someone else or try a better time. This will not only take you out of your comfort zone, but it will also let you discover the tips and tricks of your colleagues’ roles at a personal level.
Transform your internship into your recruitment gem.
No matter the focus of your internship, you will be asked to do a variety of tasks you are likely to be unfamiliar with. Later in your job search you will need to individualize your resume to match the job postings. The internship will potentially expose you to different working environments. You need to read the job postings carefully and find anything specific that the recruiter is looking for. Then think of a related task you have completed successfully and point it out in the description in your resume.
Tip: Use Harvard Resume Format as it is considered the perfect resume according to career experts.
Overcome your imposter syndrome and build confidence.
It is more likely for a high achiever to be affected by imposter syndrome. This makes it difficult for them to acknowledge their success. Students are highly likely to experience this especially at their first job. It is one of the biggest confidence killers and takes a lot of energy to overcome. An internship is the best way to transfer from education into the professional world. It allows you to feel the waters before diving in and therefore lifts some of the pressure at work. The sooner you overcome this, the sooner you will focus on excelling at your career.
Do tasks you are sure you will fail.
Challenge yourself! Most job postings nowadays look for enthusiasm. Sometimes, overcoming your fear is more difficult than the task. That is why exposing yourself to scary tasks will make the new tasks less scary when completed. This will later help you be bolder and stress less in any job you proceed. What is more, you might find something new you are good at.
