Career Options after a Master in Geography


After your masters in geography, you get a lot of different skills. This is because during your studies you gain knowledge about society, environment, culture and politics. For example, you improve your ability to communicate, analyze and order data. What’s more, you learn how to use maps and how to create projects which can help to solve many contemporary issues. Sometimes it’s hard to decide which way would be the best for you. In this article, I will try to guide you through different career paths to help you define your next step after finishing studies.

Your strong points and career opportunities


Data analyst

You should think about working as a data analyst if your strong points are:

  • teamwork 

  • creativity and good humor

  • planning and self-motivation 

As a school teacher you will work with children and teenagers. In particular, you will have to find in yourself patience, a method to reach your pupils and the ability to present knowledge in the most attractive way. Obviously you will have to cooperate with children but also with other professionalists and parents. Therefore, you have to be observant and notice predispositions and levels of your pupils. What’s more, you will have to prepare materials and use different learning methods.  


Town planner

You should think about working as a town planner if your strong points are:

  • ability to negotiate

  • creativity 

  • planning and management 

Town planners are responsible for development of the city, town or village. They should be aware of the consequences of the actions they plan to take. In addition, they should know how it can influence on the structure of the city, daily life of citizens and environment. Finally, it is important for them to communicate clearly what their ideas are to negotiate properly. Awareness of the law is crucial as well. 


Architectural technologist

Another option is to work as an Architectural technologies if your strong points are:

  • interest in math, architecture and design

  • logical, practical and creative thinking

  • communication and interactions

This job sometimes requires working under pressure and making big decisions. In fact, there is a lot of collaborative work but also it’s an individual creating process. As an architectural technologist you will design and create architecture projects. For example, you will work from the scratch to get big results. So, you have to pay attention to details and have an eye for the design. You will work with people for the people. 


Cartographer

You should think about working as a cartographer If your strong points are:

  • good spatial awareness and color vision

  • analyzing data

  • ability to work with graphics

As a cartographer you will mainly transfer information into maps. In particular, you need to have an ability to interpret data, compose them into vision and keep it clear. You will work with technology and new digital mapping techniques so being good at IT is important. Besides maps you will design charts or diagrams. That’s why your aesthetics are essential.

How to decide what is the best for you?

Here are just some examples of jobs you can choose after finishing masters in geography. Obviously, without any previous experience it is difficult to decide, but knowing your strong points is helpful. Try to order your skills and interests. Then imagine how you feel after choosing a specific career. Geography is a really wide field with a lot of interesting sides. Don’t doubt your knowledge and choose what your intuition tells you.
