According to a report by Financial Times, Youtube is planning to add new shopping features within its video platform. Previously, we have seen similar models in other social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. In particular, these ads (shorts) will allow users to make purchases as they are surfing their home-page feeds. So, by acquiring this strategy Youtube is trying to expand its live shopping theme and join other platforms investing in Livestream and e-commerce.
Moreover, this huge video platform has recently announced its partnership with Shopify, another e-commerce platform, aiming to start an integrated Livestream shopping experience. A feature quite similar to what Tiktok recently acquired. In particular, live shopping events are some kind of programs that allow viewers to buy products directly from the seller-hosted streamed events.
The Shopify partnership
Shopify is a platform with a user-friendly interface. In fact, it helps a variety of businesses build their virtual store and sell their products through different streamlined platforms. Youtube’s recent partnership with Shopify will allow eligible youtube creators and channels to connect their Shopify stores directly with their profiles. Through this method, viewers can proceed with their purchases through Youtube without even leaving the platform’s page.

The idea of an in-app shopping mechanism
The whole new idea of setting up a new in-app shopping strategy came out of nowhere, or at least Youtube didn’t bring it like that. In November 2021, during Youtube’s Holiday stream and shop event, the platform announced on its blog that ‘people are willing to shop within Youtube’. This statement was followed by a study conducted by Youtube in partnership with policies and TalkShoppen. In this survey, 89% of users agreed with getting a recommendation from Youtube creators. So, the study gave them the confidence to expand their goals. It was defined as making it easier to shop by integrating it within their platform and also removing extra steps in this process. Therefore, this makes the whole shopping experience fun and simple through a user-friendly interface and interactive for the users.
