This is definitely better than asking them to change their mind after the decision was already made.

Why you are asking for a pay increase is a critical question that you will be asked. Therefore it is necessary to know how to respond and react. If you are feeling like that your work is not appreciated enough, or the performance isn’t equal to the salary, consider these facts as reasons for asking. The stronger data or numbers you state, the harder it will be for your manager to prove it wrong and deny your request.

Secondly, schedule the meeting in advance. In fact, it is much better than suddenly knocking on your boss's door. It will show them that you consider their time and you don't catch them in a rush. What’s more, they have plenty of time for the discussion.

Finally, be confident. This conversation might seem intimidating, but you have the facts and evidence with you to support your request. Be prepared that your manager may push you back or say no for the first time. However, take that as a starting point for you to work as hard as possible to get the pay raise you deserve.

Knowing your own value and being able to ask for its appraisement is essential for your career support and growth. Therefore, if you follow these few advice mentioned above, you should be successful with your request.
